The perception-reality gap in financial literacy: Evidence from the most literate state in India

Abstract: This study measures the level of financial literacy and evaluates the impact of demographic and socio-economic attributes on financial literacy among the educated young adults in Kerala, the most literate state in India, during the year 2015. The study also analyses the perception‐reality gap in financial literacy and the attitude of young adults towards financial education. Primary data collected using a structured questionnaire from 736 young adults is used in this study. Statistical techniques such as analysis of variance and chi-square test are employed to analyse the data. The findings reveal that the financial literacy in Kerala is low, with an average young adult answering only 44% of the questions correctly.

Abstract: The economic importance of financial literacy among individuals necessitates policy intervention. Estimation of financial literacy is a prerequisite for strategies to improve financial literacy. This paper, using data collected from the educated young adults in Kerala, the most literate state in India, builds a predictive model for financial literacy employing logistic regression. The study reveals the low level of financial literacy in the state. The model points to the significance of gender, age, religion, discipline of study, occupation, and personal income as determinants of financial literacy. The findings have implications for policies aimed at improving the financial literacy of young adults in India.

Turning the Lockdown to a Lockstep for Turnaround

In the Q&A session of my training programmes on personal excellence and leadership, a recurring comment from participants especially in the middle and senior cadres is about the feasibility of the ideas discussed, strategies evolved, and the action plans developed during the session. They would say, “Dr., these ideas are excellent. But, I am afraid that they are so, on paper. Since you have experienced the rigour of a corporate life yourself, please share your thought on it.” They would also attempt to reason out their opinion with their helplessness to find time to implement those ideas in their already busy schedule.
